Our Mission

BIMA-NY is a new Jewish, theatre company; a Company dedicated to Jewish themes, writers and performers, exploring the drama, music and comedy of Jewish life set against and in 21st Century America .  Being Shomer Shabbat is at the essence of this company, integral to its very being.  BIMA-NY Company seeks to speak with a new Jewish voice, one that is young, hip and Jewish, with the substance of deep theatrical work and knowledge. BIMA-NY will present theatre that delves into the Jewish psyche, opening new areas of understanding.  Sabbath observance is a necessary component of this exploration and definition, providing a link to Jewish tradition.  Sabbath observance defines us and is at the root of this company providing a place for Torah-observant artists, among others, to perform and create.

We mean to say it loud and proud.   BIMA-NY resounds with the sounds and stories of Jews in the 21st Century, mirroring our shared experience.  Each BIMA-NY  play will offer an innate history lesson and yet pulse with the theatre of and about the present, brave and unafraid.

Every season will buzz with the development of musicals that utilize Jewish musical forms.  The music of niggunim, Klezmer, Ladino and the whole of the liturgy along with classical, jazz, hip hop and rock will all combine to sing the songs of Jewish life.  Musical workshops will offer the time, arena and opportunity for musicians, dancers and librettists to create new musicals.  Presentations of musicals in workshop as well as in finished form will become a centerpiece of BIMA-NY Rep’s production seasons.

BIMA-NY will explore the work with students through a developed theatre education program aimed at Jewish, private and public school students. Students will come to matinee performances, intern with the company and learn the dramaturgy inherent to the work.  Families will participate in BIMA-NY Family Sundays.  Singles will come to our Motzi Shabbat (after Sabbath) theatre gatherings.

BIMA-NY Theater Company will present an ongoing series of workshop performances presented in and around New York .  Audiences will participate in the creation of new work. Future national and international tours will bring work beyond the bounds of New York to audiences around the world.

At BIMA-NY , we see theatre as a point of assembly, a place of community and an arena for dialogue and exploration. BIMA-NY theatre company will serve as a repository for stories and oral histories, a testament of Jewish survival and renewal.
