The Butterfly Within

The Butterfly Within is a new play by Thomas M. Kelly  It is a story about the changes that have occurred in the neighborhood and culture of Manhattan's Lower East Side, as seen through the interaction of a young Asian woman and an elderly Jewish man.  Secrets are revealed and tolerance and  respect develop as these two neighbors form an unlikely friendship.

Dreidel Slam

Get your gelt on with Makor’s all-night Hanukkah bash featuring live klezmer, theater performances, and ninja puppetry. Latkes, jelly doughnuts and wine included.

Puppeteer Dov Weinstein performs a Tiny Ninja version of the Hanukkah story. Theater troupe Bima-NY stages some short plays and the Alex Kontorovich Trio parties throughout the night with foot-stomping klezmer.

Theatre Shabbat

Watch a multitalented troupe of actors from Bima-NY perform Shabbat Shalom, a short play about a newly observant couple spending a Shabbat with their non-observant parents. This story gives a thoughtful look at the perspectives two generations have about religious practices.

BIMA-NY Presents "Rachel Calof": Based on a Yiddish family memoir, Rebecca Ritchie's play depicts the life of a pioneer American homesteader. Rachel Calof overcomes extreme hardships in her struggle to build a Jewish-American life free of Old World superstition.

BIMA-NY Presents: FMNJ (Formerly Married to Non-Jews). The young Jewish theater group BIMA-NY stages a reading of Theodore Kemper's comic play FMNJ (Formerly Married to Non-Jews), which focuses on a support group for men and women who have divorced their non-Jewish spouses. Theodore Kemper has published several books and numerous articles about the sociology of emotion, a field in which he is a respected authority. FMNJ is a hilarious and provocative work that examines intermarriage from sociological, familial and personal perspectives.

FMNJ is a comedy, though it deals with the tensions inherent in some interfaith marriages; the play tackles some complex issues while maintaining a comic tone.

This reading was directed by Harriet Spitzer-Picker.

BIMA-NY Presents a Staged Reading of "Faces of War".

The highly dramatic play, Faces of War, a provocative look at the Israeli-Palestinian crisis seen through the lives of two friends raised together, but now on opposite sides of the war, was given its New York premiere, July 10 as part of Bima-NY's monthly staged reading series.  It is being produced by BIMA-NY in association with Makor/92nd Street Y, directed by BIMA-NY member, Harriet Spitzer-Picker.Faces of War.  "Faces of War" was written by award-winning television writer, Stephanie Liss, who won a Writers Guild Award for her teleplay, "Hidden in Silence".

BIMA-NY Presents "Stanton Street Live" at the historic Stanton Street Shul.

Stanton Street Live!: A New Light in December.  An evening of new work written and performed by members of the BIMA-NY theater collective.  Performances included:

bulletBringing Down the Light, a reading of a one-woman play written by Nicole Raphael, based on a Chassidic tale;
bulletDramatic excerpts from the award-winning novel The Matzo Ball Heiress by Laurie Gwen Shapiro;
bulletHoliday-inspired musical selections sung by Harriet Spitzer-Picker and Allen Rickman.
